The Jewish Calendar is rich with Jewish holidays all year round. It begins in Tishrei wich is generally in the early fall Sept/Oct. The 1st of Tishrei is the Jewish new year. Ten days later is Yom Kippur - the day of atonement. Five days later it is Sukkos - The Jewish holiday of Tabernacle where Jews shake the Lulav and Esrog (Etrog) and live in a hut called a sukkah for 8 days. Kislev 2 months later is Chanukah the festival of lights as it is so often called lasts for 8 days commemorating the victory of the Hashmonim Kohanic family against formidable odds with the Greeks. The 15th of Shevath is the birthday of the Trees. 14th of Adar is Purim commemorating the victory of survival against Haman in the Persian empire. 14th of Nissan is Passover commemorating the Exodus of Egypt. 5th of Iyar commemorates the modern Jewish state's battle of independance. Sivan commemorates the giving of the Torah on mount Sinai over 2000 years ago. The 9th of Av commemorates the destruction of both Temples, the nation mourns. The month of Elul prayers of repentance are recited every day in preparation of Rosh Hashanna.
